Theme 2: Deliberation in Practice

Synthesis of findings from climate citizens’ juries

This project is using 32 UK DMPs, running from 2019-2023, and synthesising these findings to identify areas where public attitudes converge on issues of climate policy. This synthesis will then be compared with other available sources of data, including surveys and polls, to create the most comprehensive picture to date of public attitudes to climate policy.

Recent work in deliberative democracy suggests that DMPs can also have a role to play in signalling to the public wider gaps between public opinion and government policy (Lafont, 2019).  Alfie will then be comparing his findings from UK DMPs on climate to current UK government policy which will identify key gaps between public priorities and government policy on climate. Alfie also holds an undergraduate degree in Geography from Lancaster University, and he is particularly interested in the potential role of deliberation in creating transformative climate policy
